About Nicky

I am Nicky Massey and I stood for election for Police and Crime Commissioner for Cambridgeshire and Peterborough in the May 2021 elections. Thank you to everyone that voted for me! In total I got 102,000 votes and came within 3% of winning the seat but alas it was not to be this time. What this space. I will continue to campaign on domestic abuse, violence against women and girls, I will continue my work on road safety. I am not going to go away. So please join me in my campaigns in the future because together we can.

I was first elected as a city councillor in Abbey ward Cambridge in May 2018, and I am now an Executive councillor for Transport and Community safety for Cambridge City.

I live in Cambridge with my husband and our three teenage children. I am also mum to Ethan, who died just before his fourth birthday in 2013. My background is in charity fundraising and, before Covid, I hosted community events for May Day, Hallowe’en and Christmas and local street parties.

I first realised I could have a voice and make a difference when I had to be Ethan’s voice in hospital. Together we changed policy at Great Ormond Street, and his memory inspires me every day – as all my children do. It was a difficult time but sparked my interest in campaigning. After almost being hit by a bus while crossing Station Road with my children I campaigned for a safe crossing – and, after 4 months, we managed to succeed!

I’m really proud to represent the community in Abbey ward Cambridge and Cambridge residents as a whole within my role as Executive councillor for Community safety and Transport. Recently we worked together to campaign – successfully – for Marshall to relocate their radar mast after it caused real misery to residents in nearby houses, and we have also lobbied for improvements to road safety at the Barnwell/Newmarket Road roundabout.

Since becoming a councillor, I’ve taken a lead on health and wellbeing issue, and I sit on county council health committee. I’m a governor at Addenbrookes and also consult on the building of the new Children’s Hospital. In 2019 I became Executive Councillor for Transport and Community Safety and, since then, have worked on issues including cycle theft and increasing take-up of our taxicard scheme for disabled residents. I’m a member of both the Police and Crime Panel and the Greater Cambridge Partnership – its first female voting member – where I use my position to lobby for better transport links. County Lines drug dealing has had a significant impact on Cambridge’s young people, and I was proud to be part of the team that designed Operation Carmel, working with police to reduce the risk to our communities. My involvement in community safety is why I’m also standing for election as Police and Crime Commissioner for the County.

I’m passionate about better services for people experiencing domestic abuse. As a survivor myself I know how important it is to have services that work for those affected. I’ve hosted an annual domestic violence conference and chair the domestic abuse community partnership. Recently I started a local campaign to stop violence against women and girls – it is such an important issues, and so many women I know (that we all know) have been affected. We shouldn’t just accept it as ‘part of life’ – we need to speak up.  There has to be a change in the way we talk about these issues to get them to stop.
